Being the huge film junkie that I am, I spend about 90% of my Online time on film-related websites, and lately I've been noticing a trend growing on them in regards to people's opinions on film, and its one that frustrates me.

It's not the different opinions, as I'm a firm believer that if everyone were to have the same opinion, we'd all be woolless sheep on two legs. It's not the inconsistency between reviews written by the same people, as we're all guilty of that from time to time, myself included. It's also not the bashing that goes on from some people that feel everyone has to agree with them, cause I like to laugh at them and anything that makes you laugh cant be so bad. No, my problem arises with something that I feel is far more frustrating then all those things – The growing trend that if a movie isn't absolutely perfect, then its a bad movie.

Let me give you some examples so you're on the same page as me. On one Site I go to, one of the Site's members gave X-Men Origins: Wolverine a 7/10. Now, in my books, 7/10 is a decent score, however just about everyone replied with messages such as 'Oh, so it's not worth checking out then?' and 'I was looking forward to this, but I guess I'll wait for DVD now' and even 'Well there goes any hope I had of it being good'. Just about everyone was acting as if 7/10 was actually 3/10. Since when did 7/10 become a bad score? On another Site I attend, a member there, when reviewing a movie, if he has any complaints about the movie at all, no matter how small, he treats the movie like the worst thing to hit cinema since Uwe Boll's latest flick. And he goes from that extreme to the other, which is Absolutely Perfect, and he treats those movies as if he's just taken ecstasy and has had the best sex of his life (reading his reviews at times are more disturbing then you can picture in your head) and for him, there is no in-between.

I'm finding the Internet getting filled more and more with those types of people, and it frustrates me to no end. Can't something be good without it being perfect? Can't something be so-so without it being absolute garbage? Of course it can, but people these days just don't see things that way anymore. Not every movie is made to be the next Citizen Kane. A lot are made for solely two reasons: To make money, and to entertain, and I figure as long as it does the latter, then it can't really be regarded as a bad movie (Unless it falls under the So Bad, It's Good category). I've actually stopped writing as many reviews as I used to, because I found it was making me too critical of movies and I discovered to my surprise that I was beginning to fall into the type of people this article is about. Now I only write reviews on about 5% of the movies I actually watch, and I'm finding that my mind-set is reverting back to a way of thinking that I grew up with and that made me enchanted by film as a teenager – Just sit back, turn off your brain, and enjoy this form of entertainment for what it is and don't try to look too deep into something that doesn't require it.

There's no need to get uptight or worked up just because a movie isn't absolutely perfect. You can still enjoy something that's in the middle of the rating system perfectly fine. Like me, you can sign up now for an attitude change and get some free Chill Pills.

This Crazy Canadian has an unsatisfying hunger for film of all kinds - Good movies, Bad movies, Indy movies - All kinds of movies and
TV shows. He tends to give everything a chance and won't make up his mind until actually viewing the movie or show. When not watching movies or participating on movie forums, he's either updating his blog, reading comics or books, or playing a mean game of Unreal Tournament 3 online. When away from the computer and TV, he's mostly either working as a hotel maintenance man or exercising.
