Our Take: I can’t decide if I love these classic Hollywood movie sets or not. On the one hand, they’re usually a mix and match of good and bad titles. On the other hand, what some people consider bad, other people consider great, so these sets are often the only way to get some of the more obscure films of the major actors of Hollywood’s past on DVD.
Ultimately, I tend to lean towards being in favor of them, I just wish the studios would put a little more effort into them. Lionsgate’s new Cary Grant: 4-Disc Collector’s Set is a perfect example. This is actually one of the better sets in terms of movie selection. By including Indiscreet, The Grass Is Greener, That Touch of Mink, and Operation Petticoat, Lionsgate has picked out four of Grant’s very popular films. While you won’t get His Girl Friday or Bringing Up Baby (or any of Grant’s Hitchcock outings), all four of these films are fairly well-loved by audiences. Oddly enough, my favorite in the set is probably Operation Petticoat, but more out of nostalgia than actual quality. This was one of my favorite movies when I was a kid, as I caught it on TV a bunch of times during the summers.
The problem is, all four of these films have been available on DVD before. There’s absolutely nothing new here: no films you haven’t seen on disc before, no new extra features (no extra features, period), nothing. There’s really nothing to entice people to buy this set other than the fact that it’s Cary Grant and there are four pretty good films in it.
Cary Grant: 4-Disc Collector’s Set is filled with great co-stars such as Ingrid Bergman, Tony Curtis, Deborah Kerr, Robert Mitchum, Jean Simmons, and Doris Day. However, due to the lack of anything new at all, the bottom line is that this set is great solely for people who love Cary Grant and classic Hollywood and don’t already own these four films.
