Lance Reed, a seemingly innocent man, is forced by a psychotic stranger to confront his duplicitous past. The mysterious stranger, seeking retribution for a past crime, forces Lance to reveal his inner most secrets by systematically removing his limbs! As time runs out and Lance’s limb count dwindles, he must recall what he’s done to the stranger before he doesn’t have a head to remember with. Jam-packed with laughs, gore and some insane twists, Chop is the directorial debut of Deadgirl screenwriter and Troma veteran Trent Haaga.
Our Take:
Chop goes for that camp/funny/mocking horror genre and it just missed for me. I like low brow horror when it sets out to entertain, but this needed just something more. I’m not really sure what that more would be, but I needed some screwball thing to really like it. When the acting is bad, the script is bad and production value is this low, you need that extra bit to make it satire and it almost got there with the ending, but just isn’t the classic it set out to be.
Special Features:
- Outtakes
- Deleted Scenes
Conclusion:
Chop is far from the worst gratuitous horror film ever made, but it had potential to be great. It will definitely have its fans with genre kids, but I‘ve seen two other films just recently that are miles away better (Thankskilling, Tucker & Dale Vs. Evil). The reason for the killings is kinda funny and will make you think the next time you get involved in a similar situation, but it was more Saw than Troma.
ALMOST THERE!
