Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star

Official Synopsis:

Bucky (Nick Swardson) is a small town grocery bagger, going nowhere in life until he discovers that his conservative parents were once adult film stars! Armed with the belief that he has found his destiny, Bucky packs up and heads out to LA, hoping to follow in his parents footsteps. Also starring Christina Ricci, Don Johnson and Stephen Dorff.

Our Take:

Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star isn‘t the worst movie ever made or even the worst movie of 2011 like many say. That being said, it‘s not good by any means, but there are 3 or 4 laugh out loud moments. If they were aiming to make an outright stupid movie, well they certainly accomplished that (and I really hope that was the plan because if this wasn’t supposed to be stupid, I need to talk to a producer about it). Swardson’s Bucky appears to be semi-retarded and the hair cut doesn’t help, but I did find myself laughing at a few things and from what I was told, I wasn’t expecting to laugh at all. Maybe the below bottom expectations really helped, but I could honestly see myself watching this again. When he first auditioned and started doing porn made me laugh a lot. Maybe it was Nick’s facial expressions or the delivery or whatever, but I laughed.

Audio & Video:

The Blu-ray (like most comedies) probably isn‘t a necessity, but it did look great. Colors were sharp, Bucky‘s hair and teeth really shined especially the black light scene where his teeth glowed. Sound quality was just as good with the sounds of Iowa and then Los Angeles really popping on your flat screen.

Special Features:

  • Laughter Is Contagious
  • Behind the Teeth
  • Gary: Tough Customer
  • Bucky Sparkles
  • BD Live Enabled

Conclusion:

If watched as a stupid, awful movie, Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star can be somewhat enjoyed. I found myself laughing at how dumb a lot of it was, but at least I was laughing right? The accents, the hair, the teeth, might all be too much for some people, but if you like Swardson, you might like it. I am a fan of his so maybe that helps a lot. I even met him last year and he was hilarious then so maybe my impression of him helps. Sure the critics will kill it cause critics suck and most people will bash it when they haven’t even seen it, but it’s not unwatchable. It’s no Grandma’s Boy, but I thought I wouldn’t laugh at all.
