Official Synopsis: It's the cozy little Boston bar where everybody knows your name... raise a glass to Cheers - the Emmy Award-winning smash-hit television series that kept the laughs uncorked for 11 seasons. Will wedding bells chime for Rebecca (Kirstie Alley) in Cheers: The Ninth Season? She believes they will when Robin decides to pop the question - much to Sam's (Ted Danson) dismay! Woody (Woody Harrelson) gets hooked on a home shopping show, while Norm (George Wendt) and Cliff (John Ratzenberger) investigate a fight between Sam and Frasier (Kelsey Grammer). And an appalled Carla (Rhea Perlman) must be civil to Cliff when she discovers that he's a judge for the "Miss Boston Barmaid" contest! Join the gang for another round of free-flowing laughs in this 26-episode volume of the classic TV sitcom.
Our Take: After the cliffhanger ending of Cheers’ eighth season (and a very long wait between that DVD set and this newest collection), season nine of the show saw it continue it’s long and successful run with even more plot development. For a show about a bunch of people drinking in a bar, the later years of Cheers really got somewhat plot-heavy. Rebecca catches Robin embezzling, agrees to marry him in order to keep silent, and then is forced to watch as he runs away to Europe. Her and Sam share a passionate night of romance, but when Robin returns to the States in season nine, a whole new love triangle is (re)opened.
In between all this, we get to see Sam decide he wants a child, Woody fight for his girlfriend’s affections with a French man, and all the usual wackiness with Carla, Norm, Cliff, Frasier, and Lilith. Season Nine is a solid year of a sitcom that once ruled the television landscape, even if it’s not a show that’s aged the best. As one of the more recent seasons, this one holds up pretty well, but it’s still almost 20 years old at this point.
As usual, the DVD set that Paramount has put together is lacking any extra features. However, one of the shows in this collection is the 200th episode, which is a retrospective of the first eight years of the show and features some really great cast interviews, so that’s a nice inclusion.
While Cheers isn’t necessarily a show I feel the need to go back and revisit, I’m glad Paramount has finally released Cheers: The Ninth Season on DVD. With the 200th episode included, it’s a really nice set for fans of the show to pick up, even if they haven’t been collecting the series as a whole so far.
