Official Synopsis: The creators of Kill Zone take action to the next level with a breakthrough combination of hard-hitting mixed martial arts battles and nail-biting tension. Kung fu legend Donnie Yen (Hero, Seven Swords) returns as the police force's most dangerous detective, building a case against a vicious trio of drug smuggling brothers. When evidence is destroyed and witnesses are murdered, he takes the fight directly to his enemies - no holds barred. Climaxing with a spectacular 16-minute bone-crunching showdown, this Hong Kong smash hit is "an entertaining action blowout" (Ross Chen, LoveHKFilm). Our Take: Flash Point is yet another release in the Dragon Dynasty realm. With it we get a slightly uneven film but it’s only so for about the first half of the movie because once that 45 minute mark creeps up on you, Flash Point turns itself into a whole other beast that proves itself worthy of the Dragon Dynasty name.
What I wasn’t too thrilled about in the beginning was that it was just a basic cop movie. The fight sequences were more than that of the usual but the story just kind of limped along. And while the choreography is great, it’s also a bit cartoony, which kind of got on my nerve a bit. For example, there’s a shot of a man getting repeatedly hit with a machete but not a single cut is made or drop of blood spilled; it’s awkward and childish looking.
But then things turn around, right about the time when the turkey bomb explodes (if you want to know what a turkey bomb, is you should check out the movie, although the name really says it all). From there on out we get a focus on action and plot that brings the film as a whole up quite a few levels.
The DVD set is a 2-Disc and quite a nice one at that:
* Commentary with Star and Action Director Donnie Yen and Hong Kong Cinema Expert Bey Logan.
* Behind The Scenes Gallery (48 minutes) –Includes three featurettes:
- Collateral Damage: The Making Of Flash Point.
- Flash Point Explored .
- Perpetual Motion.
* The Ultimate Fighters (10 minutes) – These two features are like training videos and kind of lame:
- Gladiators
- M.M.A. On Display
* Promotional Gallery (34 minutes) – Two more featurettes:
- On Dangerous Ground: An Exclusive Interview With Leading Man And Action Director Donnie Yen .
-Gala Premiere.
* Deleted Scenes (3 minutes) – Three scenes.
Flash Point isn’t the best that Hong Kong cinema has to offer, but even when it’s at its worst it’s still a fairly entertaining movie. Pick it up if you’ve liked what Dragon Dynasty has had to offer or if you want to see a turkey bomb; it’ll be worth it.
