Official Synopsis: The west goes gruesome in this gunslinging terror ride into the town of Amnesty. The small town is a shattered shell, empty of all life except Mobius, a vengeful killer who cuts down anyone unfortunate enough to cross his path. But Clem is coming to town - and she and her posse are not going to go quietly... Our Take: ”Saw Meets the Spaghetti Western,” (as the DVD box proclaims) Left For Dead is not. But if someone out there is ambitious enough I wouldn’t mind seeing what a real ”Saw meets the spaghetti western” would look like. To kick things off in the wrong direction, the coolest sounding bit about this movie is spelled out to us in text form during the opening credits instead of us ever getting to see it. And then we’re kind of waiting around for all these murderous “whores” (as the text for the movie calls them) to come around and we never really get any of that. Then in another annoying turn, the opening credits run steadily through the first 10 minutes of the movie. Hey, if you want to throw your credits 10 minutes into the movie that’s fine, but don’t have them start at the zero mark and continue on for a good chunk of the actual movie’s length.
Left For Dead is one of those cases where you see all this great potential and you just wish the culprits involved in ruining the movie could have seen it for all the good it could have been. There’s some nice Devil versus God work at play here; we have a strong woman lead, which is always refreshing; and it’s an old school western, for crying out loud. You shouldn’t be allowed to make a bad western in this day and age.
Included as the only special feature on Left For Dead is a Feature Commentary with Director Albert Pyun.
Taken segment by segment it’s easy to see some good in Left For Dead; for instance, if I were just editing this thing scene by scene it may seem cool enough to actually be a good movie. But once you put everything together, we’re left with little more than a few cool and bloody shoot-outs.
