Official Synopsis: What Will It Sound Like When You Die? Who Will Be Next To Get The Call? It happens to one. Then another. And another. College students discover eerie voicemail messages on their cell phones. Each call comes from the near future. Each call has the chilling voice of the student during his or her last moments alive. And each call comes true. Terror is One Missed Call away in this got-your-number shocker based on the hit Japanese thriller Chakushin ari. Does the viral spree of calls have a single source? Is there something that links the victims? Psych student Beth Raymond (Shannyn Sossamon) and detective Jack Andrews (Ed Burns) scramble for answers. And they're working fast. Because Beth just discovered an ominous message. Our Take: I haven’t seen many of Takashi Miike’s films. I bring him up because he directed the original Japanese version of One Missed Call but, as you can probably guess, the American remake is abysmal. It still hasn’t turned me off from one day wanting to see the original and I don’t think you should let this movie turn you off from that one either, but I can only speak speculatively.
I’ve seen a fair bit of these American remakes of Japanese horror films and I’ve yet to like a single one of them. It doesn’t even seem to matter what kind of talent is involved in the production as I think The Ring is one of the dumbest movies I’ve ever seen (Naomi Watts is my favorite actress and Gore Verbinski’s The Weather Man is one of my favorite films). Talent just can’t seem to save these films.
From what I understand, even the people who enjoyed The Ring have pretty much agreed that all the other remakes have gone downhill since then. So it only makes sense to keep that tradition alive and make sure One Missed Call is as dumb a movie as they come, right?
It’s not like I wasn’t giving this movie a fair chance either. I love Shannyn Sossamon and I think Edward Burns is great (especially when in his own films) but I just couldn’t get around how boring the movie is. There’s no real structure here at all: a phone call comes in, someone dies, another phone call, another death, etc. And this goes on and on with no change until the movie ends. It’s simply not entertaining.
There are, of course, no special features on the disc.
The only cool thing about this movie is the design of the mystery creature/ghost/whatever-they-are’s. They look pretty cool but then the filmmakers went ahead and used full CGI to fully realize the characters and it ruined just about all coolness it once instilled. As it is, the creature design in One Missed Call is the only reason this movie didn’t get an F.
Overall Picture: Movie: D- DVD: C
