Our Take: Law & Order: Special Victims Unit is a tough show to watch. I don’t mean to knock its quality in any way, it just deals with particularly tough subject matter. Despite that, the show is a huge success, and watching the episodes in the Law & Order: Special Victims Unit - The Sixth Year collection, it’s easy to see why.
With sharply written scripts, excellent acting by leads Christopher Meloni (one of my favorites) and Mariska Hargitay, and compelling mysteries, SVU has what any good cop show needs to thrive. I’ve noticed a spate of cop dramas lately that have terrific characters but crimes that are so easy to solve, they’re transparent. As is always the case with Law & Order, SVU - The Sixth Year never focuses so much on the characters that the crime/mystery gets lost in the shuffle. While in some procedural shows (such as Bones) I prefer a little extra character development, Law & Order: SVU strikes the perfect balance.
Once again, SVU features a stellar range of guest stars, including Alfred Molina, Abigail Breslin, Martin Short, Judith Light, Maggie Grace, Anne Meara, Kyle McLachlan, Mary Stuart Masterson, and in a rare television appearance, Angela Lansbury. With all these guest stars, it would be easy to rely solely on stunt casting, but SVU stays strong on story and always topical, such as with the episode where a crime is literally an exact recreation of a scene from a violent video game.
The only bonus feature in this set is a particularly fun one:
- Law & Order: Special Letters Unit – The SVU pays a visit to Sesame Street as Detectives Mariska, Meloni and Munch search for the missing letter "M".
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit is not a show I watch regularly because it’s so dark, but I enjoy it for the quality of the production, acting, and writing. Fans of the show will be happy to have another season on their shelves.
Overall Picture: Show: B+ DVD: C+
