Delirious

Official Synopsis:
Les (Steve Buscemi), a small-time paparazzi desperate to make it big, befriends Toby (Michael Pitt), a young homeless man with no direction except a vague desire to become an actor. When by chance Toby becomes romantically involved with a celebrity pop star (Alison Lohman), Les grows jealous and creates a devilish scheme to take down his former apprentice in this wickedly fun comedy.

Our Take:
Tom DiCillo doesn’t get as much respect as he probably should. Let’s not forget that this is the man who gave us Living In Oblivion, practically a staple for every film student. Granted, his last film, Double Whammy, may have been funny, but it probably did deserve its direct-to-DVD release. Delirious is a step up from his last screwball comedy, taking a turn towards slightly more serious comedy.

Steve Buscemi is basically a staple in Tom’s films and he does a great job here playing off the poor, homeless character that Michael Pitt (a brilliant actor) delivers to us in puppy dog fashion. What we mostly have here is a tale of Paparazzi versus fame and how the two lives criss-cross into oblivion. It’s funny, it’s sweet, it’s ridiculous at times, but overall it’s just a plain good time.

Before Judd Apatow and the billions of viral marketing videos took over the web, Tom DiCillo let one slip that was really quite funny. It involves of the film’s stars (Gina Gershon) and a few others as Tom tries to convince her to act in a sex tape in order to gain promotion for the film. It worked, and the clip was huge for a while but this was during the film’s limited theatrical run, so the majority of the people who saw the clip couldn’t see the movie. They should have released this little tactic to coincide with the DVD release, as it likely would have boosted sales in a huge way.

Special features on said DVD include:

* Stalking Delirious Featurette.

* Promotional Shorts.

* Director Commentary.

* Music Video - “Shove It.”

I haven’t seen all of Tom’s films but I like what he has to offer and I like his commentary on the business in general. Give Delirious a try; It’s not as corny of a movie as the DVD cover makes you think it is.
