Our Take:
It’s easy to make jokes at Murder, She Wrote’s expense nowadays (Yeah, yeah, we’ve all heard it; Jessica Fletcher is a serial killer. Yawn.) Sure, it’s about a little old lady of a mystery writer who goes around solving murders and it probably appeals to the Matlock demographic more than anything else, but for its time, Murder, She Wrote was a quality show. Look, when you get nominated for 57 major awards over a highly rated decade-long run, you have to be doing something right.
I loved the show when I was a kid. It may not be sexy, hip, or cool, but it does present solid mysteries in a very Agatha Christie-lite setting. Miss Marple was clearly an inspiration for Jessica Fletcher, who is, of course, played to perfection by Angela Lansbury. Lansbury’s performance is probably the chief reason why the show was so popular; I doubt it would have worked with any other actress in the lead role.
Murder, She Wrote: The Complete Eighth Season is a pretty standard affair in terms of the DVD release. There are no extra features, and at this point, the show had run out of surprises, although it was still pretty good. What you get are five discs filled with 22 enjoyable mystery tales, and that’s really bad at all.
