Our Take: I have a confession to make: I never really liked The Cosby Show.
I know, I know, it was one of the most popular sitcoms in American television history, but I never really dug it. As a kid, I watched it sometimes along with the rest of the country, but it was always more because I didn't want to be ostracized for not having seen it than anything else. I also never quite found Bill Cosby all that funny, so he wasn't a real draw for me.
But I thought I'd go back and give the show a spin now that it's being released on DVD. I always figure that everything deserves a second chance, and I can't tell you how many shows and movies I've changed my opinion on between being a kid and being an adult. So how did the show fare?
Eh.
That's really about all I can say. The show's not terrible; I certainly don't hate it. It's not great, either; I don't think I'm going to start singing its praises anytime soon. It's a mildly amusing family sitcom that, to me, is just like every other mildly amusing family sitcom out there. I will say that the show hasn't aged too badly; aside from the usual fashion/hairstyle issues, people who loved this show back in the 80's will probably still enjoy it.
The real letdown here is the lack of extra features. Regardless of what I think of the show, there's no changing the fact that it was beyond popular in its heyday. To see it basically dumped on the market with no real care or thought in its production is disappointing.
Ultimately, this is a decent collection for fans of the show, but there's nothing to make it really exciting.
