Beavis and Butthead: The Mike Judge Collection Volume 3
Official Synopsis:
How did two self-absorbed dimwits who basically wasted their lives watching TV and playing air guitar inspire three DVD box sets, five years of television, a hit movie, a hit album, and in the process change the course of comedy, animation and pop culture? Vision. Beavis and Butthead's unique vision of the world, a world divided into boobs and butts, things that are cool and things that suck, had never appeared before on television. It immediately stuck something deep and dumb in America's collective unconscious. To Beavis and Butthead's limited and dawning imagination, everything became fresh and full of wonder, as to the mind of a newborn babe or like when you blow on your thumb real hard until you pass out. Includes 42 cartoons hand-picked by Mike Judge, included the original, uncut Frog Baseball.

Our Take:
And just like that, the honeymoon is over. A little while ago, I proclaimed how much I enjoyed the second Beavis and Butthead collection, largely due to the episode that introduced Beavis's alter-ego, Cornholio. I guess I enjoyed that episode so much that it colored my opinion on the rest of the set. Or maybe it's just the fact that, this being the third and final collection in Mike Judge's hand-picked sets, they just ran out of good stuff. Whatever the reason, this time around, I found America's dumbest duo much less endearing than I did last time around.

As always, there are still some laughs to be found, but I spent more time groaning and grimacing while watching the show than I did laughing. Maybe one set of Beavis and Butthead is all I need to keep me happy.

However, die-hard B&B fans will be pleased with this collection, which includes not only 42 cartoons, but also the original, infamous, started-it-all Frog Baseball short. That right there is a special feature that is as important as it is iconic. Here's what you get in the set:

* Music Videos - 15 music videos, Beavis and Butthead style.
* The Original, Uncut Frog baseball (3 minutes) - The cartoon that started it all. The voices and animation are... interesting.
* Taint of Greatness: The Journey of Beavis & Butthead Part 3 (24 minutes) - The final chapter in the making-of trilogy.
* Special Appearances (35 minutes) - A collection of clips of Beavis and Butthead at things like the Video Music Awards.

Beavis and Butthead occupy a very odd niche in pop culture history. They were as popular as can be for a while, but now they seem to be more of a footnote than anything else. This uneven collection presents a pretty good argument for why.

Overall Picture:
Show: C+
DVD: B+
