Official Synopsis: Live from the city that never sleeps comes the comic that never backs down! In Damon Wayans: The Last Stand?, the star of In Living Color and My Wife and Kids brings his edgy, irreverent comedy to New York, where his no-holds-barred - and no-stone-uncovered - stand-up has his audience rolling over with both laughter...and disbelief! From his take on an uncomfortable encounter with Mike Tyson, to a demonstration of how any woman can get the most out of her man, Wayans is on fire! So, sit back and take a deep breath...because you'll laugh nonstop when this master funnyman takes the stage.
Our Take: I'm something of a stand-up comedy-aholic, so I was fairly excited when I saw that Damon Wayans had a new stand-up disc coming out. I've always enjoyed a lot of his work, even if his latest TV show hasn't really been my cup of tea. Still, a good hour or so of stand-up is always just what I need to cure what ails me.
So I was a little surprised when Wayans came out on stage in Damon Wayans: The Last Stand? wearing a bright orange jacket with shoulder pads and an orange beret, and looking about 15 years younger than he does now. I quickly flipped over the DVD case to see what the description said, but it just tells me how funny Damon Wayans is. Finally, I scanned down to the teeny, tiny copyright date and realized that this actually WAS a new special.
In 1990.
That's right, this special is 16 years old. Is it funny? Sure, if you don't mind half the jokes being about In Living Color or things that were popular back in the late 80's. I guess I wouldn't have minded so much if the packaging indicated somewhere that this was on old show, but it doesn't. Even the cover photo is cropped to hide the outfit that so clearly dates this act.
So if you're a huge Damon Wayans fan, this disc will get you an old stand up act and no extra features. Try not to get overwhelmed. Recommended for big fans only.
Overall Picture: Movie: C+ DVD: D (Points off for deceptive packaging.)
