David Spade: Take The Hit
Official Synopsis:
David Spade (Just Shoot Me!, The Showbiz Show) takes the spotlight in his first HBO solo stand-up special. Taped before Spade's hometown of Phoenix at The Improv, where he launched his career, the no-holds-barred comedy stylings range from recollections of being a "bad date" in high school to his friends' stoner antics and, of course, his signature scathing observations on celebrities and pop culture. It's an evening of nonstop laughs from the man who always manages to find a way to bring on the funny.

Our Take:
I'm not sure I even realized that David Spade did stand-up comedy. I thought he went right from doing Saturday Night Live to making funny movies to making crappy movies. Nevertheless, in Take The Hit, Spade returns to his hometown for a stand-up set that is, much like his body of work, uneven.

Spade is at his funniest when he's making fun of things. His bits about the airport had me laughing out loud, and he does some pretty funny redneck-humor about his dad, but he also falters at times. Even the live audience senses it; it's not just that I didn't always laugh, it's that you can tell that there are times that jokes fall flatter than they were supposed to with the crowd. Still, Spade works the crowd well for the most part and is surprisingly adept at incorporating sound effects into his act (who knew?).

The downside of this DVD, besides the uneven nature of Spade's comedy, is that it comes with no extra features. Normally I don't complain about that on stand-up discs, but with a running time of under an hour, an interview or some sort of featurette would have made a nice addition. Overall, if you're a die-hard Spade fan, you should be pretty pleased with this show. Otherwise, it's worth a few chuckles, at least.
