The Bob Newhart Show: Season Three
Official Synopsis:
Bob Newhart is back as successful Chicago psychologist Dr. Robert Hartley in the third season of this hilarious '70s sitcom. As the good doctor continues working with his patients on their issues, he continues to be a "master of denial" concerning his own personal issues at home. But Bob is finally forced to accept the fact that he may have a problem or two when his obsessive-compulsive behavior and inferiority complex cause his self-doubt to soar—and his patient list to shrink. Maybe it's finally time he took his wife's advice and scheduled a psychologist appointment of his own!

Our Take:
It seems like it's impossible to read any sort of article or review about Bob Newhart or The Bob Newhart Show without seeing the word 'deadpan.' I think what makes this brand of humor so appealing to people is that a deadpan reaction to any situation is almost always guaranteed to be something low-key but quick witted. While I’m not generally a fan of this type of humor, I do have to admire it; and it certainly beats derivative “witty” one-liners or Three Stooges-type physical slapstick comedy. What makes people laugh is a very subjective thing; whether or not The Bob Newhart Show will make you laugh is entirely up to you and what kind of humor you enjoy. Some will remember this show as one of the great classics, placing it in the pantheon with the likes of M*A*SH*, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, or All in the Family. Each of these series has their own subtle differences, but for the most part, they all were amusing to one extent or another.

The Bob Newhart Show is nicely packaged, though the double sided discs are a minus. Nevertheless, it’s something I guess we’ll have to accept today where everything from Gilmour Girls to Golden Girls is being released on DVD and shelf space is at a premium! Included in the set are some special features that would make even Bob Newhart crack a smile!

* Select Episode Commentaries - Bob Newhart is joined by actors Peter Bonerz, Jim Burrows, and Fred Willard, each on different episode, as well as providing a commentary all by himself. He keeps things very open and honest, while always the comedian trying to put some sort of spin on things. These are a must-listen for any fan.
* Featurette (9 minutes) - Newhart discusses the making of the show and its success. It’s basically just him speaking along with clips from the show. There isn’t anything spectacular here, but it’s good to see him.

If you’re into dry, witty repartee, then The Bob Newhart Show is highly recommended. If you’re like me and you’ve spoiled yourself with too much low brow humor, then the genius of this show might not be so apparent. Still, ultimately I think there is something here for everyone to appreciate.
