Official Synopsis: Dan Aykroyd Unplugged on UFOs explores past and present sightings from around the world with shocking real footage, much of it never before seen, that will leave even the most skeptical viewers scratching their heads. Along with the fascinating collection of stunning eyewitness videos, Akroyd reveals his own vast knowledge of the strange and paranormal as he explores in detail his views on conspiracy theories, military secrets, and how UFO technology is currently part of our everyday lives!
Our Take: I know how bizarre this title sounds. Dan Aykroyd? Talking about UFO's? Dan Aykroyd from Ghostbusters and The Blues Brothers Dan Aykroyd? Yep, that's the one. Apparently, Aykroyd is a huge believer in alien life, and I guess he's what you could call an "activist" in that field. When he met up with a documentary filmmaker who shared his passion, the result was this film.
It's interesting on a couple of levels. First of all, Aykroyd must be pretty comfortable with himself to go on the record and talk at length about UFO's. Keep in mind; this is not a comedy, a spoof, a mockumentary, or anything like that. It is a serious interview/documentary, and Aykroyd shares his thoughts on everything from Roswell to Area 51 to co-opted alien technology and more. Amazingly, though, he manages to not come off sounding like a raving lunatic. He approaches the subject very seriously and calmly, and he shares numerous thoughts and opinions, but he's sedate and doesn't run around screaming like a freakshow. That in and of itself makes the whole thing much more digestible. The other thing the film has going for it is the plethora of really amazing footage and photographs of purported UFO's. If you're fascinated by this subject at all, there's a lot of really cool stuff to look at in this documentary.
There are no extra features on the disc, but when the program is a documentary/interview to begin with, bonus features can be a little bit redundant anyway. That being said, though, it would have been nice to have had a photo gallery of all the photos from the film.
I don't think that Dan Aykroyd Unplugged on UFO's is going to convince anyone to change their minds on what they believe about UFO's, but Aykroyd presents a lot of well-researched theories that have been adopted by UFOlogists the world over, rather than just carrying on about spaceships and anal probes. I have to admit that I found myself pretty captivated by the film as a whole. If you're into UFO's at all, this one is definitely worth a look.
